故事发生在1958年的美国，年轻的女子米尔德（鲁丝·内伽 Ruth Negga 饰）爱上了名为理查德（乔尔·埃哲顿 Joel Edgerton 饰）的男人，两人很快就走到了一起。然而，这段恋情却在社会上掀起了轩然大波，原因只有一个，那就是米尔德是一名黑人女子，而理查德是一名白人男子。 这段黑白恋令他们所居住的弗吉尼亚州震怒了，州长竟然就此事将两人告上了法庭，审判结果非常的荒谬，夫妻两人双双被判入狱，而两人获得赦免的条件是，理查德必须永远的离开弗吉尼亚州，再不回来。米尔德和理查德并没有顺从于这不公平的命运，而是为了捍卫他们的爱情和人权，进行了上诉。
